TRANSIT SLEDGES

Some inland movements of Works of Art necessitate purpose-designed, practical, cost-effective solutions and invariably do not necessitate climatic protection (insulation).

As an example, some large ship models in their glass display cases were transported from the Science Museum in London to their new venue at the Scottish Maritime Museum. This task necessitated the design and manufacture of cushioned transit sledges which afforded sufficient protection for the journey by road and at the same time provided a safe means of lifting from storage in London into road transport and offloading to the Museum in Scotland.

STORAGE CASES

From time to time objects are required to be stored whilst Gallery display facilities are not available, either on a temporary or long-term basis.

Kent Services will design and manufacture special cases to meet the needs of Museums and Galleries, such that objects can be safely moved and given suitable climatic protection during the period of storage, whatever or wherever that might be.

A typical example was of a unique Iron Age object required to be stored temporarily whilst a Gallery was being refurbished. Another example was of a newly acquired scientific collection to be stored on a long-term basis. An added feature of the design was the incorporation of clear windows to enable visual examination of the objects without the need to unpack (see photograph below).

EXHIBITION DISPLAY/HANDLING PLINTHS

Many objects are so delicate that when required to travel for exhibition it is desirable to keep the handling to an absolute minimum.

When this is the situation, Kent Services will design and manufacture special exhibition display units, which can form part of a handling and transportation system. This results in a situation where the only handling of an object is the initial placing and securing onto the plinth and subsequent removal back to permanent display on return. The object in the photographs below is a typical solution created and supplied by Kent Services.
