FACT SHEET 9 |
‘MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES’ OBJECT HANDLING TROLLEYS
|
|
Kent Services has responded to the need of Museums, Galleries and Private Collections for an in-house handling solution combining trays in which to carry objects together with a wheeled movement facility. The resulting Handling Trolley is a purpose-designed, purpose-built system to enable objects to be moved with total safety within the building in which they are normally housed, as well as within Museum operated transport as required and as necessary, between different locations. Manufactured from strong durable materials, the trolleys incorporate a combination of stackable trays from 2 to 4 high, dependent on the depth of each tray, up to a total maximum height of approximately 1.25 metres. The length and width are variable to suit access points, e.g. doors, lifts, etc. Each tray is lined with 12mm (nominal ½”) Plastazote to provide a safe lining and can be provided with drop down sides or ends as required to suit individual customer needs. This enables objects in trays below the top level to be removed without dismantling the trays. Hand holds or surface handles are incorporated on each tray to enable them to be carried by two or more people. The trays are supported by, and locked into, a strong solid base on the underside of which are fitted four swivel castors, to achieve smooth, easy omni-directional movement. The final solution will be that specified by and agreed with the customer to ensure we supply the most practical cost effective solution.

The following photographs illustrate one of the many possible alternative versions of the Handling Trolleys, with additional features: 1. The incorporation of two completely removable trays ( top two), for use as ‘stand-alone’ carrying trays for movement of objects in areas where it is not possible to use the full trolley.
2. The top tray is designed such that all four sides open and drop down 180 degrees, giving a clear flat cushioned working surface (see pic 2). The two lower trays also have drop down sides for easy access. 3. Pneumatic tyres are fitted to improve vibration protection together with other detailed features such as rubber ‘buffers’ to ensure the safety and security of objects.
