Glossary of Terms used in
Packaging and Packing

CASE An assembly of panels secured by mechanical joints.
CONTAINER A fully enclosed structure suitable for transportation of goods (solid and liquid).
CRATE A framework of nailed solid timber slats and battens.
CUSHION LOADING Load, mass, weight of an object per unit area kg/cm2.
CUSHIONING Materials used to reduce the effects of shock and vibration.
FITMENTS Materials used in the support and restraint of packaged goods.
FRAGILITY FACTOR A level of acceleration expressed in units of Standard Gravity (gn) which, if exceeded, may cause damage to the objects.
FURNITURE Materials used in the support and restraint of packaged goods.
HALF-TIME Being the time it takes for the temperature to rise or fall half the temperature difference between outside temperature/container internal temperature.
LOAD SPREADER A stiff material to increase the projected area of an object to meet the loading requirements of a cushion material.
PACKAGE The product of a complete series of packaging operations.
PACKAGING The operations involved in the preparation of objects for transportation, storage and delivery to user. The term embraces Preservation, Marking and Packing.
PACKING The operation of packaging by which objects are enveloped in wrapping and/or enclosed in containers or otherwise secured.
SEAL A mechanical fixture between base and lid to prevent moisture ingress.
SEALED CONSTRUCTION Panels assembled mechanically to prevent moisture ingress.
SEPARATOR BOARD A stiff material used to separate layers of objects from above and below.
SINGLE TRIP CONTAINER Suitable only for a single journey.
RE-USABLE CONTAINER Suitable for many journeys.
THERMAL
CONDUCTIVITY
The rate at which heat will flow through a material (see Half time).

BORROWING
INSTITUTION
Most usually a Museum or Gallery outside the UK, but may equally apply to UK Museums and Galleries.
LENDING INSTITUTION Usually a Museum or Gallery within the UK.
OBJECTS (Two-and Three-Dimensional) A term for Museum exhibits covering ceramics, metalwork, wood, textile, glass, jewellery, costumes, paintings, books, manuscripts, sculptures, etc.
SLOTTED A term to describe a container housing a number of framed objects, usually in a vertical configuration. The two sides of each framed object will be supported in preformed Plastazote foam channels. The top and bottom edges of the frames will be cushioned with an appropriate thickness of polyurethane foam in the lid and base, respectively.
TWO-DIMENSIONAL A term used for an object having two dimensions: length x breadth, and of minimal depth; e.g. a framed object, oil painting, drawing, print.
THREE-DIMENSIONAL A term used for an object having three main dimensions: length x breadth x depth; e.g. ceramics, glassware, furniture, etc.
